Barbara Cairns

On May 30th 2008 Barbara Cairns had her dream fulfilled, to see Phantom of the Opera.

Barbara suffers from metastatic lung cancer. At the time of her dream fulfilment she was experiencing respiratory difficulties. This was impeding her ability to walk and hence she was wheelchair bound, with her breathing at times being assisted with the help of oxygen. Special arrangements were made so that she did not have to leave her wheelchair.

Her daughter, Suzanne accompanied her on the dream. They were collected and chauffer driven by Southern Cross Limousines ahead of the show and enjoyed a delicious three-course meal donated by the Astral Restaurant at Star City.

Tickets to the show were generously donated by The Phantom of the Opera Production.

Barbara and Suzanne had a fabulous night.

‘We were so excited in the lead up to the show, and it didn’t let us down’ excites Suzanne, ‘everyone must see the show.’
‘Thanks so much to D2L4 for organising the night, it was really good to do something different with Mum and change the pattern or our normal day to night activities and routine. ‘

Barbara had not left the immediate area of her home for some years and she was amazed at how Sydney inner city had changed so much. On the way to dinner she talked of buildings in which her husband and father had worked. Whilst watching the show, Charlie her chauffeur, did some quick research, and gave her a circuitous drive home so that he could drive her by areas where the buildings used to be. “It was such a lovely touch on his behalf so thoughtful. I loved it - I received so much more than my original dream”. Barbara explained.
