Mathematical dream becomes a reality - Dreams2Live4

Dreams2Live4, an executive fund raising committee of the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation, established to help people living with metastatic cancer fulfil their life dreams, has realised a first dream for 2008.

On Tuesday 5th February Sue Negrine, from Edgecliff in Sydney met Terence Tao, a young, renowned, Australian mathematician who is the head of UCLA mathematics department in the United States.

Sue is living with metastatic cancer, and is a patient of Professor Friedlander at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick. She has watched her son Grays’ interest and love of mathematics grow over the years. “To be able to give him this special gift is just overwhelming” she said, when first learning that the dream was to be realised, “my immediate reaction was one of disbelief followed excitement – I couldn’t wait to tell him.”

The dream meeting took place at the Carrington Hotel where Terence Tao was attending a conference, and Chris Dennison of Aussie Bush Discoveries & Corporate Australiana Tours generously donated transport to and from Katoomba.

The evening was a great success. The food was very good at the Carrington Hotel Brasserie, but like typical mathematicians it was secondary to the mathematical conversations.

“Terence Tao is an amazing person I really want to thank him for the time he spent with us, my son Gray and our young friends Henry and Angus will never forget the experience” said Sue.

The Dream2Live4 initiative is the brainchild of Annie Robinson, a woman who has lived with metastatic cancer (advanced cancer that has spread to other parts of a person’s body) for the past eight years. Annie was featured last year in a special documentary on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope on ABC TV, which told the story of her inspiring battle with cancer.

The Dreams2Live4 Committee aims to attract supporters who have the contacts to assist them in realising the dreams of many more cancer sufferers in the future.
